How do I renew my driver's licence in Québec?

In Québec, the SAAQ mails you a payment notice every year before your birthday. You pay the fees and the insurance contribution before the deadline, which is your date of birth. The plastic licence must be renewed every 8 years, and the SAAQ reuses the photo it already has in your file to produce the new one. You can pay in SAAQclic with your bank account, at your financial institution or by cheque, but not by credit card.

Steps

Wait for the payment notice the SAAQ mails you every year before your birthday.
Read the notice: it shows the total to pay and the deadline, which is your date of birth. Also fill in the health section and the change-of-address section, if needed.
Pay before the deadline: in SAAQclic with your bank account, at your financial institution (online, at the ATM, at the counter or by phone), by automatic bank withdrawals or by cheque. The SAAQ does not accept credit cards.
For a plastic licence, you do not have to go anywhere: the SAAQ reuses the most recent photo in your file to produce your new licence.
If you are outside Québec, you can renew your licence before leaving if you are within 3 months of its expiry date, by going to a SAAQ service point.
If you do not want to renew your licence, notify the SAAQ before the payment deadline.
