What are the winter tire rules in Québec?

Your vehicle must be fitted with winter tires from December 1 to March 15. The requirement applies to all motorized road vehicles registered in Québec, including rental vehicles. A tire designed for winter driving must show the pictogram illustrated on the Québec.ca page or be studded. A fine of $200 to $300 applies to drivers who do not comply. A few exceptions exist, and the SAAQ issues a 7-day exemption certificate in some situations.

Key facts
Required period
From December 1 to March 15.

All motorized road vehicles registered in Québec, including rental vehicles. Trailers and vehicles registered outside Québec are not covered.
Fine
$200 to $300 for drivers who do not comply with the regulation.
Compliant tires

Exceptions
Trailers, vehicles registered outside Québec, heavy vehicles, tool vehicles, farm machinery, spare wheels, motorcycles used as emergency vehicles, motorhomes, vehicles with a removable plate (X plate), as well as 7 days after buying a vehicle from a dealer (with the sales contract) and certain other cases listed on Québec.ca.
Exemption certificate
Issued by the SAAQ for 7 days, on request in SAAQclic or at a SAAQ service centre.
Steps
  1. Check whether your vehicle is covered: the requirement applies to all motorized road vehicles registered in Québec, including rental vehicles.
  2. See whether your vehicle falls under the exceptions (trailers, vehicles registered outside Québec, heavy vehicles, motorhomes, X plates, etc.).
  3. Have your winter tires installed by December 1. You must keep them on until March 15.
  4. Check that each tire designed for winter shows the pictogram illustrated on the Québec.ca page or is studded. Retreaded or remoulded tires for passenger vehicles must also carry the pictogram or be studded.
  5. Check the tread depth: it must not be less than 1.6 mm, and at least 4.8 mm is recommended in winter.
  6. If you are in a situation that entitles you to an exemption, apply for a winter tire exemption certificate (valid for 7 days) in SAAQclic or at a SAAQ service centre.
  7. After March 15, wait a few weeks before putting on your all-season or summer tires, because spring conditions can vary.
