How do I get or renew a Canadian passport?

✓ Verified answer Written from official pages, with checked citations and a verification date.

To renew an adult passport, you do not need a guarantor, proof of Canadian citizenship or proof of identity if your passport meets the conditions. You may be able to do it online if you need it in 20 business days or more. For a first passport, you need proof of Canadian citizenship, identity documents, 2 photos, a guarantor and 2 references. You choose a 5-year or 10-year passport on the form. For fees, check the official list on Canada.ca.

Steps
  1. Check whether you can renew: your passport must have been issued when you were at least 16, within the last 15 years, and be valid for 5 or 10 years. It must show the same name, date of birth, place of birth and sex identifier as the ones you want on the new one.
  2. If you need your passport in 20 business days or more, see whether you can renew online. Among other things, your passport must expire within the next 6 months or already be expired, your home and mailing addresses must be in Canada, and you need a digital photo taken by a professional photographer less than 6 months ago.
  3. Otherwise, renew in person (Service Canada centre or passport office, with or without an appointment) or by mail.
  4. For a first passport (or if you cannot renew), gather proof of Canadian citizenship, a document confirming your identity, 2 identical passport photos, a guarantor and 2 references.
  5. Fill in the form on your computer (Adult passport application form PPTC 154 for a new passport) and indicate in section 6 whether you want a 5-year or 10-year passport.
  6. Submit your application and pay the fees: in person by appointment or without an appointment, or by mail. The exact fees are on the official fee list.
  7. Wait for your passport: the time is counted in business days and does not include mail delivery. Express and urgent services exist.
