How does the solidarity tax credit work?

✓ Verified answer Written from official pages, with checked citations and a verification date.

General information, not advice. According to Revenu Québec, the solidarity tax credit is a refundable tax credit meant to support low- or middle-income households. For the payment period from July 2026 to June 2027, you might be entitled to it if you met the conditions on December 31, 2025. It has three components: housing, the QST, and residence in a northern village. To get all the amounts you may qualify for, you must apply with Schedule D of your income tax return or in Mon dossier pour les citoyens. The amounts and rules are those in effect in 2026 and change from one payment period to the next.

Key facts
Payment period covered
From July 2026 to June 2027, based on your situation on December 31, 2025 (in effect in 2026; the next period will have its own dates).
Components
Three: housing, the QST, and residence in a northern village territory. You do not need to qualify for all of them. A person who lived in an ineligible dwelling (for example low-rent housing) can still receive the other components.
Payment frequency
Based on the determined amount: $240 or less, a single payment in July; $241 to $799, four payments (July, October, January, April); $800 or more, one payment per month. If Schedule D is not filled out, payments might start only in the fall.
The amount depends on
Family income: the result can be reduced. For an estimate, Revenu Québec offers an estimation tool on its page. This page gives no amount.
Direct deposit
Generally required to receive the credit.
Documents
Notices about the credit are sent by mail by default; you can choose to receive them online only in Mon dossier pour les citoyens.
Steps
  1. Check the eligibility conditions on December 31, 2025: being 18 or older (or being in one of the listed situations if you were under 18), living in Québec, and you or your spouse being in one of the listed status situations (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, temporary resident or temporary resident permit holder who lived in Canada for the last 18 months).
  2. Check the situations that do not give entitlement to the credit: being detained for more than 183 days in 2025, Family Allowance paid for December 2025, or being an asylum claimant (you and your spouse, if any) on December 31, 2025.
  3. File your income tax return: you must have filed it to be entitled to the credit. If a spouse lives with you, only one person fills out Schedule D for the couple.
  4. Apply by filling out Schedule D or by using the online services in Mon dossier pour les citoyens. Without that request, you will receive only the basic amount and the spouse amount of the QST component.
  5. For the housing component, prepare the proof requested: the unit number shown on the Relevé 31 given to you by your landlord if you rent or sublet, or the lot number or cadastral designation on your municipal tax bill if you own.
  6. Register for direct deposit: as a general rule you must be registered to receive the credit, and your application is considered complete only with this registration.
  7. Wait for your notice of determination: it shows the amount for the payment period. The credit is paid within the first five days of the months concerned, at a frequency that depends on the amount (see the information below).
  8. If you forgot to apply, the page says you must apply within four years after December 31 of the taxation year taken into account in the calculation.
