How do I create my CRA My Account and Revenu Québec My Account?

✓ Verified answer Written from official pages, with checked citations and a verification date.

General information, not advice. There are two separate accounts. For the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) My Account, you register for a CRA account with your date of birth, your social insurance number and an amount from your recent income tax return, then have your identity verified. For Revenu Québec's My Account, you sign in with the Government Authentication Service (which replaced clicSÉQUR) or with a sign-in partner. In both cases, get your documents ready before you start.

What My Account is for (Revenu Québec)
Meet your tax obligations online and access documents such as your recent notices of assessment or confirmation of the amount of your advance refund.
What to have on hand (CRA)
Date of birth, social insurance number, an amount from your most recent assessed income tax return (from the last 2 years) and at least 1 multi-factor authentication option. Registration session: ends after 18 minutes of inactivity.
What to have on hand (Government Authentication Service)
Health insurance number, social insurance number, Revenu Québec notice of assessment number (starts with Q or M, 11 characters) and the reference number of your driver's licence or health insurance card.
Requirements (Government Authentication Service)
Be 14 or older, act on your own behalf and have a unique email address (linked to a single account).
If you do not have all the documents
CRA: security code by mail, within 10 business days. Government Authentication Service: identification secret by mail, up to 15 days.
Steps
  1. CRA My Account: first check that you have filed an income tax return for the current or the previous tax year (to register with a CRA user ID and password). If not, you cannot register until you have filed one. Exception: in Alberta or British Columbia, a provincial partner lets you register without a return.
  2. CRA My Account: gather your date of birth, your social insurance number (SIN), an amount from your most recent income tax return that has been assessed, and a way to receive an access code (multi-factor authentication). Your registration session ends after 18 minutes of inactivity and nothing is saved.
  3. CRA My Account: choose a registration option: CRA user ID and password, sign-in partner (your online banking information) or provincial partner (Alberta or British Columbia). Then register for multi-factor authentication.
  4. CRA My Account: have your identity verified. With a mobile device and an ID (Canadian passport, Canadian driver's licence or provincial or territorial photo ID card), you get immediate access. Otherwise, the CRA mails you a security code within 10 business days.
  5. Revenu Québec My Account: you can sign in with the Government Authentication Service (which replaces clicSÉQUR) or with a sign-in partner. Before you finish registering, you will have to accept the terms of use.
  6. Government Authentication Service, step 1: you must be 14 or older, act on your own behalf and have a unique email address. Choose a username and a password, enter your email, then validate with the six-digit code you receive by email.
  7. Government Authentication Service, step 2: prove your identity with your health insurance number, your social insurance number, your Revenu Québec notice of assessment number and the reference number of your driver's licence or health insurance card.
  8. If you do not have your notice of assessment or either reference number, you can request an identification secret by mail (allow up to 15 days). At some SAAQ service centres, staff can also help you create your account if you do not have all the documents.
