How do you get a marriage certificate?
✓ Verified answer Written from official pages, with checked citations and a verification date.
The marriage certificate and the copy of the marriage act are separate official documents issued by the Directeur de l'état civil. You can apply online, by mail, or at a Services Québec counter that offers this service. You must be named in the act or provide a document that justifies your request. The published fees range from $38.50 to $82.25 depending on how you apply and the processing time you choose, and they are in effect until March 31, 2027.

- Processing times
- Times exclude the registration time for a new event in the register (if it is recent) and the delivery time. Registration of a marriage is listed at 45 business days if the documents are complete and compliant.
- Marriage held outside Québec
- The Directeur de l'état civil issues the document if the marriage took place in Québec. For a marriage held outside Québec, you must contact the competent public officer of the place where it was celebrated.
Steps
- Choose the right document: the certificate presents an extract of the information in the act, while the copy of the act is a full reproduction. Find out which exact document the organization you will give it to requires.
- Check that you can apply: you must be named in the act, or provide a document that justifies the reason for your request.
- Choose how to apply: online with DE Clic! (with an identifier from the Service d'authentification gouvernementale and a credit card), by mail (form for marriage or civil union), or at a Services Québec office that offers the service.
- If you apply by mail, attach photocopies of two documents issued by two distinct organizations: a valid identity document with photo and a valid proof of address. At a Services Québec counter, show the original documents.
- Choose the processing time: normal processing of 10 business days or accelerated processing of 3 business days (the price changes).
- If the marriage is recent, add the registration time for the civil status register: the Directeur de l'état civil can only process your request once the registration is done.
- Pay the fees using a payment method accepted for the way you chose to apply.
