How do I apply for student loans and bursaries?

✓ Verified answer Written from official pages, with checked citations and a verification date.

General information, not advice. The Student Financial Assistance Loans and Bursaries Program is for people studying full time whose financial resources are insufficient. To be eligible, you must among other things be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or have refugee or protected person status, be considered a Québec resident and be enrolled in a recognized institution and program. You can apply online (which speeds up processing) or by mail, and the application is not renewed automatically: you must submit one for each year of study. The application for 2026-2027 is open.

Key facts
Year covered (in effect for 2026-2027)
The 2026-2027 application covers the award year from September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2027.
When to apply
Usually starting in May for the next school year. Stated deadline: 30 days after your last month of study of the current school year.
Documents to provide
45 days after the completed application to send the requested documents or forms; no later than December 29 following the end of the school year for all documents and changes to your situation.
What the program provides
First a loan, repayable at the end of your studies. If the loan is not enough to cover your needs, you may receive a bursary that does not have to be repaid. The calculation takes into account your personal situation, your study expenses and contributions.
During and after full-time studies
No loan amount to repay during your studies. After your studies: an automatic 6-month period before you begin repaying and a possible 15% reduction of the loan if the conditions are met.
